Cystoscopy is a medical procedure used to diagnose, monitor, and sometimes treat disorders of the lower urinary tract, including the urethra and bladder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What is a cystoscopy?<\/h3>\n

A doctor uses a Cystoscope<\/strong> (a long, thin tube with a light and a camera at the end) inserted through the urethra into the bladder to examine the lining of the bladder and urethra in detail, revealing abnormalities not seen with other tests.<\/p>\n

Indications for Cystoscopy (Why is it performed?)<\/h3>\n

A doctor may recommend a cystoscopy if a patient has the following symptoms or abnormalities:<\/p>\n

  • Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)<\/strong> to detect structural abnormalities that may be the cause<\/li>\n
  • Urinary disorders<\/strong> such as burning, frequent urination, pain, delayed urination, or incomplete emptying of the bladder<\/li>\n
  • Diagnosis and monitoring of diseases:<\/strong>

    \n– Urethral stricture or obstruction

      Types of Endoscopes Used<\/h3>\n

      1. Flexible cystoscopes<\/strong> are highly flexible, causing less irritation or pain for the patient. They are often used for general diagnostics and follow-up.<\/li>\n
      2. Rigid cystoscopes<\/strong> have the advantage of being able to perform a wider range of procedures, such as biopsies, stone removal, or small tumor surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Typical Procedures<\/h3>\n

        • Preparation<\/strong> Patients are usually asked to urinate before entering the examination room to empty their bladder.<\/li>\n
        • Anesthesia<\/strong> The doctor may use local anesthesia (applied to the urethra) or general anesthesia (anesthesia), depending on the type of endoscope and the purpose of the procedure.<\/li>\n
        • Urethroscopic examination<\/strong> The doctor inserts a cystoscope through the urethra and may inject saline into the bladder to expand the bladder lining. This provides a clear view.<\/li>\n
        • The doctor<\/strong> will perform any necessary examinations or procedures (such as biopsies) and remove the camera.
