A sinus CT scan (Computed Tomography Scan), also known as a CT Sinus Scan, is the most accurate diagnostic imaging method for assessing the condition of the sinuses and surrounding structures.
What is a CT Sinus Scan?
A CT scan uses X-ray technology combined with a computer to create a 3D cross-sectional image of the area being examined. The resulting images are extremely high-resolution, allowing the physician to see details that conventional X-rays cannot.
Key Benefits of the Scan
- Diagnose chronic sinusitis. It is the gold standard for confirming and assessing the severity of chronic sinusitis or in cases where symptoms do not improve after initial medication.
- Identify underlying pathology. Clearly visualizes swelling of the sinus mucosa, pus or discharge from the sinuses, airway obstruction, nasal polyps and tumors.
- Assess structural abnormalities, detect abnormalities of the nasal septum or bone within the nasal cavity.
- Treatment planning. CT scan data is crucial for pre-operative planning of endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), as it provides the surgeon with a clear view of the anatomy to reduce surgical risks.
General Preparation and Procedure
A sinus CT scan is typically quick and painless. Special preparations, such as fasting (unless the doctor prescribes contrast dye injections, which are rare in a basic sinus exam), are usually not required.
- Procedure The patient lies flat and inserts their head into the scanner. The patient must remain still and may be required to hold their breath briefly, as instructed by the technician.
- Duration The procedure is short, typically completing in 15-30 minutes.
