Description
Cystoscopy is a medical procedure used to diagnose, monitor, and sometimes treat disorders of the lower urinary tract, including the urethra and bladder.
What is a cystoscopy?
A doctor uses a Cystoscope (a long, thin tube with a light and a camera at the end) inserted through the urethra into the bladder to examine the lining of the bladder and urethra in detail, revealing abnormalities not seen with other tests.
Indications for Cystoscopy (Why is it performed?)
A doctor may recommend a cystoscopy if a patient has the following symptoms or abnormalities:
- Hematuria (blood in the urine) to determine the cause of blood in the urine
- Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) to detect structural abnormalities that may be the cause
- Urinary disorders such as burning, frequent urination, pain, delayed urination, or incomplete emptying of the bladder
- Diagnosis and monitoring of diseases:
– Bladder stones
– Bladder cancer or post-treatment follow-up
– Urethral stricture or obstruction
– Tumors or polyps in the bladder (A biopsy can be performed.)
Urinary Tract Symptoms
- Blood in the urine
- Painful urination, incomplete emptying of the bladder
- Inability to urinate or dribbling urine
- Urinary incontinence
- Frequent lower abdominal pain of unknown cause
Types of Endoscopes Used
- Flexible cystoscopes are highly flexible, causing less irritation or pain for the patient. They are often used for general diagnostics and follow-up.
- Rigid cystoscopes have the advantage of being able to perform a wider range of procedures, such as biopsies, stone removal, or small tumor surgery.
Typical Procedures
- Preparation Patients are usually asked to urinate before entering the examination room to empty their bladder.
- Anesthesia The doctor may use local anesthesia (applied to the urethra) or general anesthesia (anesthesia), depending on the type of endoscope and the purpose of the procedure.
- Urethroscopic examination The doctor inserts a cystoscope through the urethra and may inject saline into the bladder to expand the bladder lining. This provides a clear view.
- The doctor will perform any necessary examinations or procedures (such as biopsies) and remove the camera.
After the colonoscopy, some patients may initially experience a burning sensation while urinating or experience slight blood in the urine, which usually resolves on its own.
