Description

The chickenpox (or varicella) vaccine is an important vaccine that protects against infection with the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the cause of chickenpox.

Recommended Number of Doses and Age Range for Chickenpox Vaccination

1. For young children

  • First dose: Recommended at ages 12-18 months.
  • Second dose: Recommended at ages 4-6 years (at least 3 months after the first dose).

2. For older children and adults

For those who have never had chickenpox or have not received a vaccine before and are 13 years of age or older, the recommended dose is:

  • Two doses.
  • The interval should be at least 4-8 weeks (as recommended by the vaccine brand and your doctor).

Additional Information

  • For those who have had chickenpox before: Generally, those who have had chickenpox once usually have lifelong immunity and do not need further vaccinations.
  • Pregnant women should not get the chickenpox vaccine while pregnant, and should use birth control for at least one month after vaccination. Since this is a live vaccine,
  • People with underlying medical conditions immunocompromised individuals should consult a doctor before vaccination.
  • Important: Two doses of the vaccine provide higher and longer-lasting protection against disease than a single dose.
