Description

Cataract surgery is the only treatment that can restore clear vision when the natural lens of the eye has become clouded and is affecting daily vision and activities.

Do you experience any of these symptoms?

  • Blurred vision
  • Hazy, hazy vision
  • Double vision
  • Reading with excessive light

Principles of Cataract Surgery

The primary principle is to remove the clouded natural lens (cataract) and replace it with an artificial lens (Intraocular Lens or IOL) in the lens capsule.

Currently, cataract surgery is considered a safe, highly effective, and one of the most commonly performed surgeries in ophthalmology.

Advantages of Cataract Surgery

  • Small incisions often heal on their own, requiring minimal or no sutures.
  • Fast recovery Short surgical time (approximately 10-15 minutes), and patients can return to normal vision within 1-2 days.
  • Less pain, local anesthesia (Anesthetic drops or injections are used.) No general anesthesia is required.

Who is a “suitable” candidate for cataract surgery?

  • Significantly reduced vision, such as blurred vision, color fading, or difficulty seeing at night.
  • The reduced vision significantly impacts quality of life and the ability to perform essential activities, such as driving, reading, working, or walking around the house.
  • No other severe, untreated eye disease (such as uncontrolled glaucoma) that could affect the outcome of surgery.
  • Patients who require high levels of vision for daily activities and are willing to take care of themselves after surgery.
Note: Generally, it is not necessary to wait for cataracts to mature (as in the past). If cataracts begin to affect daily vision, the dentist will consider surgery immediately.

Who is a “suitable” candidate for surgery?

  • Uncontrolled diabetes or Persistent high blood pressure, as these may increase the risk of infection or inflammation after surgery. Your doctor will recommend that these conditions be controlled first.
  • Eye infection, untreated retinal disease (such as diabetic retinopathy), or glaucoma with uncontrolled intraocular pressure, as surgery may worsen these conditions.
  • Patients with other serious medical conditions (such as acute heart failure) that make surgery too risky.
  • Patients with retinal or optic nerve disease, for whom surgery may not improve vision as expected. Your doctor will explain these limitations to you beforehand.
