Description

3D dental X-rays, also known as CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography), are a highly advanced dental imaging technology. They allow dentists to view structures within the mouth, including teeth, jaws, and skull in three dimensions, rather than the traditional 2D flat images.

How is CBCT different from conventional X-rays?

  1. Conventional X-rays (2D)
    • These are flat (2D) images with overlapping structures, which may obscure details.
    • They focus on viewing the overall picture of the teeth and bone.
    • They have the lowest radiation dose.
  2. 3D dental X-rays (CBCT)
    • These are 3D images, showing all structures in the X, Y, and Z axes, allowing for depth and volume.
    • They have very high resolution, clearly showing details of tooth roots, bone, and nerves.
    • They are higher than conventional X-rays, but lower than conventional medical CT scans.

Benefits and Applications in Dentistry

CBCT is an important tool for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning, especially in complex cases:

  1. Dental Implants
    • Dentists use it to assess the density and volume of jawbone. For dental implants
    • Helps plan the precise placement and orientation of the implant to avoid nerve or sinus involvement.
  2. Oral Surgery
    • Used to assess the position of impacted teeth (especially the eighth molar) near the nerve.
    • Plan root canal surgery or bone grafting.
  3. Endodontics
    • Provides detailed views of root canal anatomy, such as blocked roots, fractured roots, or lesions that are not visible in two dimensions.
  4. Orthodontics
    • Helps assess the relationship of the jawbone to the facial structure to accurately plan tooth movement, especially in cases where surgery is required.
  5. General Diagnosis
    • Detects tumors, cysts or bone infections that are not visible on standard X-rays.
    • Evaluates temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

CBCT Scan Procedure

  • Quick and painless Patients stand or sit in the scanner.
  • Preparation Remove any metal jewelry from the head and neck.
  • Scan The scanner rotates one full rotation around the patient’s head, taking less than one minute to capture the actual image.
