Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a disease caused by narrowing or blockage of the arteries supplying the heart muscle. It is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and in Thailand. Being aware of this disease can help prevent and reduce the risk of heart failure or acute myocardial infarction.
Causes of Coronary Artery Disease
This disease is caused by plaque buildup in the artery walls, narrowing the blood vessels and preventing adequate blood flow to the heart.
Risk factors for heart disease include:
• High blood cholesterol (high LDL, low HDL)
• High blood pressure
• Diabetes
• Smoking
• Lack of exercise
• Accumulated stress
• Genetics or a family history of heart disease
Symptoms of Coronary Artery Disease
Symptoms vary from person to person, especially in women and the elderly.
• Common symptoms include:
• Chest pain (tightness, squeezing, or burning in the center of the chest)
• Pain radiating to the neck, jaw, shoulder, or left arm
• Fatigue, shortness of breath
• Dizziness, vertigo, or excessive sweating
• If these symptoms occur during exertion or stress and improve with rest, see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.
Diagnostic Tests
• Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)
• Echocardiogram (Echo)
• Exercise Stress Test
• CT Coronary Angiography
• Cardiac Catheterization
Treatment for coronary artery disease depends on the severity of the disease:
• Medication
• Statins
• Antiplatelet medications (aspirin)
• Antihypertensive or blood sugar control medications
• Balloon angioplasty and stent placement to improve blood flow in the narrowed arteries
• Coronary artery bypass surgery (bypass surgery) in cases where multiple arteries are blocked or balloon angioplasty is not feasible
Guidelines for preventing coronary artery disease:
• Maintain normal blood lipid and blood pressure levels.
• Eat a healthy diet, avoid trans fats and high-salt foods.
• Exercise regularly (150 minutes per week).
• Quit smoking and reduce alcohol consumption.
• Get annual health checkups, especially if you have risk factors.
