Pterygium surgery, also known as Pterygium Excision, is a surgical procedure to remove a plaque (pterygium) that has grown abnormally from the conjunctiva and into the cornea (the cornea).

What is a pterygium?

Pterygium is a growth of tissue that grows on the white of the eye and extends into the cornea.
It appears as a cloudy white or pinkish, triangular shape.
It is most commonly caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight, wind, dust, or UV rays.
It is commonly found in people who work outdoors, such as farmers, drivers, and construction workers.

Pterygium is caused by

  • Dry eye conditions
  • Sunlight
  • Dust, smoke, wind, dry air

Symptoms of pterygium to watch out for

  • Seeing a white growth on the white of the eye that gradually extends into the cornea
  • Irritation, burning eyes, frequent tearing
  • Difficulty seeing if the growth extends into the cornea
  • Chronic redness
  • If left untreated for a long time Pterygium can spread to the point of obscuring vision.

Why is surgery necessary?

A doctor will consider surgery if the pterygium has the following symptoms

  • Severely expanded into the cornea. The tissue has extended into the cornea, covering more than one-third of the width of the cornea, and is beginning to obstruct vision or cause significant astigmatism.
  • Chronic inflammation, with frequent irritation, burning, or redness of the eye, even after eye drops.
  • For cosmetic purposes. Large pterygium that causes a loss of self-confidence.
  • Interferes with eye movement (in cases of very large pterygium).
