Description
This vaccine protects against three infectious diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella, which are easily transmitted through contact or inhalation of respiratory droplets from an infected person.
Measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR)
The MMR vaccine is a combined vaccine that protects against three major viral diseases that are highly contagious and can cause serious complications, especially in young children and pregnant women.
1. Measles
Caused by a virus that spreads through coughing and sneezing.
Symptoms begin with a high fever, red eyes, and a rash all over the body.
Common complications include pneumonia or encephalitis.
2. Mumps
The virus causes swollen salivary glands and pain in the cheeks and under the ears.
It can spread to the testicles, ovaries, or brain.
3. Rubella
Symptoms are mild in children and adults. However, if a pregnant woman is infected during the first three months of pregnancy, it can cause birth defects (Congenital Rubella Syndrome).
Who should receive the MMR vaccine?
- All children should receive two doses of the vaccine:
– 1st dose: 9–12 months of age
– 2nd dose: 2.5–7 years of age - Adults who are unsure whether they have been vaccinated can receive the vaccine.
- Women of childbearing age should receive the vaccine at least one month before becoming pregnant.
