This vaccine protects against three major diseases that may seem distant, but are still common, especially in adults who haven’t had their booster shots in a while:
1. Diphtheria (Diphtheria)
The bacteria produce toxins that cause severe sore throats, difficulty breathing,
and can be as severe as myocarditis.
2. Pertussis (Pertussis)
A persistent, severe cough that causes difficulty breathing.
In young children, it can cause respiratory arrest or death.
Adults with persistent coughs that last for weeks can also be affected by pertussis.
3. Tetanus (Tetanus)
Caused by bacteria found in soil or rust that enter through wounds.
Causes muscle spasms throughout the body. Once infected, it is difficult to treat and life-threatening.
Who should get this vaccine?
- Adults should get a booster shot every 10 years.
- Pregnant women should get it between 27 and 36 weeks of pregnancy to protect their baby.
- Those with wounds from sharp objects or rust should get it immediately.
