Description
This vaccine protects against infection with 13 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, the main cause of pneumonia and other complications such as bloodstream infections and meningitis.
Importance and Target Group
The PCV13 vaccine is very important because it can induce long-lasting immunity, especially in young children and immunocompromised individuals.
1. For young children
- This is a basic vaccine recommended for infants and young children to prevent severe pneumococcal infections.
- It is usually administered according to the pediatrician’s schedule (typically multiple doses at 2, 4, and 6 months of age, followed by a booster dose).
2. For adults and the elderly
- Those aged 65 and over are recommended to receive a basic immunity booster shot first.
- People aged 18 and above with chronic diseases or immunocompromised individuals, such as chronic lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or those taking immunosuppressive medications, are recommended.
- Number of doses for adults Generally, only one dose is required as a starting dose to build immunity.
Injection sequence with the 23-strain vaccine (PPSV23)
For adults who have never received a pneumococcal vaccine before Those in high-risk groups (such as those aged 65 and over or with underlying medical conditions) are usually advised to receive both vaccines.
- The first dose should be PCV13 (13 strains) or the newer conjugate vaccine (PCV15 or PCV20) to build basic immunity.
- The booster dose should be followed by PPSV23 (23 strains) with the intervals recommended by your doctor (usually at least one year apart).
- Remember Do not administer PCV13 and PPSV23 at the same time or on the same day. The intervals must be as recommended by your doctor.
